Treaties are foundational in the past, present and future law-making processes of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.  Understanding these relationships from the perspectives of those involved is fundamental to contextualizing Indigenous relationships with the Canadian Government and the Crown. Learners will explore  the intention, process, and significance of both historical and current Treaties and agreements.

  1. Describe the impacts of worldview and perspective on the treaty and agreement making process.
  2. Explore different methods of documenting treaties and agreements.
  3. Identify the ramifications of deliberate exclusion and/or omission of impacted parties and voices in treaty negotiations.
  4. Explain how the Canadian government’s relationship with FNMI peoples has changed or stayed the same and how this relationship has impacted the treaty making process over time.
